Reframing human–elephant conflict in India through context-dependent coexistence strategies

Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) has become a significant issue in India, leading to 7,868 human fatalities from elephant encounters between 2009 and 2024, with four states responsible for nearly 70% of cases. During this period, 1,653 elephants died due to human-related causes, primarily electrocution and train collisions. Current policies are seen as inadequate, highlighting the need for more effective and region-specific strategies to mitigate HEC.
