Mumbai records over 5.29 lakh dog bite cases in 5 years; 2025 sees 1.54 lakh cases

Mumbai recorded 5,29,650 dog-bite cases involving stray dogs between 2021 and 2025 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Health activist Chetan Kothari obtained these figures through an RTI application, which revealed that 2025 alone accounted for 1,54,017 cases. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the city recorded no deaths due to dog bites or rabies during the period, though the mortality data timeline was unspecified. Kothari stated that the numbers raise questions about the effectiveness of ongoing measures to control the stray dog population. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation stated that it has been implementing sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination drives and plans to make Mumbai rabies-free by 2030.

Mumbai records 17 dog bite cases every hour in 2025, nearly double 2021 rate

Mumbai recorded seventeen stray dogs and street dogs bite cases every hour in 2025, which is nearly double the rate seen in 2021. The civic body released the data showing the sharp rise involving community dogs across the city. The numbers matter because the growing attack rate creates a public health risk and shows the need for better animal birth control implementation under the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023. The municipal authorities plan to expand vaccination and sterilisation drives to curb the rising numbers. Officials stated that teams will increase monitoring in areas with high bite frequencies to address public safety concerns. Animal welfare workers can cite the rules to local authorities when requesting intensified sterilisation camps in their neighbourhoods.

6,751 dog bite cases recorded in Tambaram so far this year

The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation (TCMC) recorded 6,751 dog-bite cases between January and Sep 2026, while vaccinating 41,485 street and pet dogs and sterilising 5,491 during a 25-day special drive, officials said. TCMC carried out the vaccination drive from August 8 across all 70 wards in its five zones, spending Rs 18 lakh from its general funds. The corporation had aimed to vaccinate 70% of the dog population but achieved much higher coverage, according to officials. A joint survey by TCMC and the World Veterinary Service estimated the corporation's total dog population at around 51,000, including an estimated 46,286 street dogs and 4,000 to 5,000 pet dogs. The drive also targeted internal and external parasites in dogs, with the goal of reducing the risk of rabies among people and animals. TCMC maintains a network of 31 urban public health institutions, including 13 urban primary health centres, stocked with anti-rabies vaccines to treat bite victims.
