PETA India calls for withdrawal of Centre’s draft rules on animal experimentation

Maneka Gandhi raised alarm over the Centre’s draft animal testing rules in Thiruvananthapuram, alleging the proposals favour companies. PETA India urged the Centre to withdraw the draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Rules, 2026. The NGO alleged the draft rules would weaken existing animal welfare protections, reduce independent oversight, and expose wild animals, free-ranging dogs, and cats to greater suffering in painful laboratory experiments. The organisation advocated stronger regulations that prioritize scientifically advanced non-animal research methods instead of weakening safeguards.

Captive Elephant Rules | Govt Or HC Can’t Extend Timeline Set By Supreme Court For Temples To Register :…

The Kerala High Court held that neither courts nor the state government can extend deadlines for temples to register captive elephants for festival processions. Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas dismissed a plea filed by the trustee and president of the Sree Manathala Shiva-Parvathi Temple in Malappuram district. The petitioners sought permission to register the temple under the District Committee and conduct an elephant procession after missing the timeline set by the Supreme Court of India under the Kerala Captive Elephant (Management and Maintenance) Rules, 2012.

Kalki Koechlin, Abhirami And Nafisa Ali Voice Opposition To Proposed Animal Testing Rules

Actors Kalki Koechlin, Abhirami and Nafisa Ali have opposed the draft rules on laboratory animal testing, GSR 864(E), and urged people to object to CCSEA. The draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Control and Supervision of Experiment, Breeding and Trading of Laboratory Animals) Rules, 2026 would replace the rules of 1968 and 1998. Abhirami said laboratories could approve experiments causing mild or moderate pain themselves, without the central committee, and take animals from informal sources, including strays. The draft was published in the Gazette of India on 6 Oct 2026, and objections are due by 6 Nov 2026.

Two female leopards released into the wild after immunocontraceptive treatment

Two female leopards were sterilised in the first such initiative in Maharashtra after receiving immunocontraceptive treatment under a pilot study by the Junnar Forest Division. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change approved the project under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, to explore scientific population management and mitigate human-leopard conflict. Smita Rajhans, assistant conservator of forests, stated, "We will monitor their behaviour in their natural habitat over the next two-and-a-half years as part of the study." Officials will track hormonal changes to assess the safety and effectiveness of the non-surgical birth control method.
