Questions about Legal Aid
A DLSA gives free legal services in a district under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. It is set up under Section 9, sits in the district court premises and is headed by the District Judge. See NALSA FAQs.
Go to the DLSA front office in the district court, or post a written application with your name, address, income, the case and why you need aid. You can also apply orally or online through NALSA.
No. NALSA says the application form costs nothing, and process fees, drafting, typing and the panel lawyer’s fees are paid by the legal services institution. See NALSA legal aid.
Free legal aid covers civil and criminal matters for people who meet the criteria in Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. If you qualify, apply to your DLSA. NALSA explains the process on its legal aid page.
NALSA’s regulations say a decision should be taken immediately and within 7 days of receiving the application. If it is refused, you can appeal to the Chairman of that legal services institution. See NALSA legal aid.
15100 is NALSA’s toll-free helpline number, shown on the NALSA website.
