Stray dog menace continues to bite people in Sirsi
Stray dogs continue to menace Sirsi town, biting people, chasing two‑wheelers and blocking roads, especially after dark. The City Municipal Council estimates more than 800 stray dogs rove the town, despite two earlier sterilisation drives that reportedly operated on about 300‑350 animals and cost lakhs of rupees, social activist Satish Bhat said. Residents say packs of dogs obstruct movement in markets and residential areas and raise accident risk for motorists at night. Municipal Council officials say a new sterilisation campaign, coordinated with the Animal Husbandry Department, is now underway, with dogs taken to a centre for surgery and anti‑rabies vaccination. City Municipal Commissioner Prakash Channappanavar declared, “strict measures have been initiated to ensure that stray dog sterilisation surgeries are carried out properly.” The campaign aims to curb the rising stray‑dog population and address concerns over fund usage.
