Allahabad High Court orders ground level audit of dog bite hotspots, directs humane removal of aggressive stray dogs
The Allahabad High Court ordered a ground-level audit of stray dogs and dog-bite hotspots along with the humane removal of aggressive animals in Lucknow and Prayagraj. The Division Bench of Justice Ajit Kumar and Justice Garima Prashad issued the directions on October 1 in a suo motu compliance proceeding concerning stray dogs and dog bites. The Court stated that authorities must balance public safety with humane animal handling, holding that the issue "involves competing public interests". Under the judicial directions, the Municipal Commissioners of Lucknow and Prayagraj must collect three years of bite data, inspect at least thirty additional public locations such as hospitals and markets, and maintain detailed records of veterinary treatment, sterilisation, and vaccination. The monitoring exercise aims to establish an evidence-based picture of the problem and evaluate the adequacy of municipal arrangements across Uttar Pradesh, as reported by Indian Masterminds, Live Law, and LawChakra.
