Animal welfare: frequently asked questions

Animal welfare: frequently asked questions

Can community dogs be removed from my area?

No. Under the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, dogs are sterilised, vaccinated and returned to the same area.

Is it legal to feed community dogs?

Yes, at designated spots. The ABC Rules ask resident welfare associations to arrange feeding areas, and the Supreme Court judgment of 22 August 2025 addresses feeding. Check the Library for later orders.

Who do I call for an injured animal?

See Helplines. In many states, 1962 sends a mobile veterinary unit. Local groups are in the directory.

How do I report cruelty?

Follow How to report animal cruelty, and use the complaint template.

Can I keep a parakeet or munia?

No. Native wild birds are protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and cannot be kept or sold.

Where can I buy a pet legally?

Only from a pet shop or breeder registered with the State Animal Welfare Board (Pet Shop Rules, Dog Breeding Rules). Better still, adopt.
