Cruelty to animals is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Killing, poisoning or maiming an animal is also an offence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which replaced the Indian Penal Code.
1. Record what you see
- Take photos or video, with the date, time and place.
- Note the names or descriptions of people involved and of witnesses.
- Get the animal to a vet. A veterinary report is strong evidence.
2. Report it to the police
- Go to the police station that covers the place where it happened, and give a written complaint.
- Ask for the complaint to be registered as an FIR and keep a copy, or the acknowledgement of your complaint.
- If the police do not act, you can approach senior police officers or a magistrate.
3. Get support
- Local animal welfare organisations often help with complaints. Find one in the directory.
- The Animal Welfare Board of India publishes the laws and rules at AWBI: Rules · AWBI: Acts.
