Acting calmly in the first few minutes makes the biggest difference. These steps apply to dogs, cats, cattle and birds.
1. Keep yourself and the animal safe
- Approach slowly and speak softly. A frightened or injured animal may bite.
- If the animal is on a road, warn traffic and move it only if you can do so safely.
- Do not give food or water if it may need surgery, unless a vet tells you to.
2. Call for help
- Find an animal ambulance, rescue group or veterinary hospital near you in the directory.
- Note the exact location and a landmark, and send a photo if you can.
- Stay nearby until help arrives, if it is safe to do so.
3. If you transport the animal yourself
- Use a towel, blanket or box to support the body and keep the animal warm.
- Keep the head and spine as still as possible after a road accident.
- Call the clinic first so they are ready.
4. If the injury was deliberate
Cruelty to animals is an offence. See How to report animal cruelty.
